Meta Commits to Massive Renewable Energy Expansion to Power Data Centers

Meta Platforms has signed a landmark series of agreements with renewable energy developer Invenergy, adding 791 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power to its data center energy portfolio. These deals mark the latest phase in a sweeping clean energy strategy aimed at supporting Meta’s growing AI and data infrastructure and bringing total power commitments in this partnership to approximately 1,800 MW.

Under the agreements, power will be sourced from solar and wind facilities in Ohio, Arkansas, and Texas. While the energy will feed local utility grids, Meta will receive associated clean energy credits, reinforcing its claim to operate on zero-carbon power. This initiative builds on earlier commitments totaling 760 MW and contributes to a broader target of supplying its data centers with sustainable electricity.

These large-scale renewable investments coincide with Meta’s expanding AI-driven projects, which require substantial, continuous power. AI-accelerated data centers may demand 20–100 MW of capacity and consume significantly more energy per rack than traditional servers. Securing renewable energy deals is therefore both an environmental and operational imperative.

In addition to Invenergy partnerships, Meta has separately secured long-term solar contracts totaling 650 MW from AES in Texas and Kansas. These arrangements, accompanied by Tax Purchase Agreements (PPAs), support decarbonization targets and offer stable pricing for both parties. With over 12 GW of clean capacity already secured, Meta is on track to provide nearly 10 GW of renewable energy to U.S. grids by end-2025.

Meta’s climate strategy includes exploring advanced technologies like geothermal and even nuclear energy. Long-term demands from AI workloads and generative computing make such forward-looking investments critical for energy reliability and ESG compliance.

The clean energy deals are also delivering economic benefits by creating hundreds of local construction jobs and supporting tax revenues in rural areas of Texas and Kansas. These community-level gains contribute to public goodwill and amplify Meta’s corporate sustainability narrative.

Meta’s clean energy surge showcases how digital giants are evolving into major players in the energy transition. Securing large-scale renewables ensures long-term cost control, regulatory compliance, and reputational gains. However, the strategy’s success depends on robust ecosystem integration, including investments in storage, grid flexibility, and long-term contract stability. As data and AI workloads grow, Meta’s approach could serve as a blueprint for renewable-reliant infrastructure in the tech sector.
