Russian authorities have announced the arrest of a suspect connected to the car bombing that claimed the life of Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a high-ranking official in the Russian Armed Forces. The attack, which occurred on April 25, 2025, in Balashikha, a suburb just east of Moscow, has been described as one of the most significant targeted killings within Russia in recent years amid ongoing tensions with Ukraine. The Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Ignat Kuzin, was apprehended shortly after the bombing and has allegedly confessed to participating in the plot.
According to official statements, Kuzin, a Russian national who held a Ukrainian residence permit, admitted to being recruited by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU). He reportedly planted a homemade explosive device inside a Volkswagen Golf vehicle positioned near General Moskalik’s residence. The explosive was remotely detonated as the general passed by, leading to his immediate death. Authorities claim the operation had been meticulously planned since September 2024, with Kuzin promised a payment of $18,000 upon successful execution.
The assassination of General Moskalik follows a series of similar attacks targeting senior Russian military officials. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Biological, and Chemical Protection Forces, was killed in a separate bombing incident involving an explosive device concealed in an electric scooter. Ukrainian officials later claimed responsibility for that attack, citing accusations against Kirillov regarding the alleged use of prohibited chemical weapons during operations in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has strongly condemned the latest incident, accusing Ukraine of orchestrating acts of terrorism within Russian borders. As of now, Ukrainian authorities have not issued any public statement regarding the assassination of General Moskalik. The timing of the attack is particularly sensitive, occurring just days before a scheduled diplomatic meeting between U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, a session intended to discuss ongoing conflicts and potential steps toward de-escalation.
